Book Buddies is a volunteer-driven program that connects caring community members with elementary students to build confidence, encourage reading, and strengthen engagement in school. What began as a pilot at Genesee Elementary has now expanded to include Herman Elementary, thanks to strong volunteer interest and positive results for students.
Community members who live or work in Cayuga County volunteer as reading mentors and are fully vetted by United Way and AECSD before participating. Volunteers meet with their student buddies twice a month during the school day to read, talk, and build meaningful connections. Teachers have seen their students grow, and volunteers consistently share how rewarding the experience is.
Book Buddies 2025-2026 schedule: Genesee Elementary: 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month from 10:30–11:10 & Herman Elementary: 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month from 11:30–12:00
