Aurelius Fire Department collected 450 items
Aurelius Fire Dept. collected the most hygiene items in 2022!

Did you know that personal hygiene items are not covered by assistance programs? Basic necessities such as deodorant, feminine products, toothpaste, and toilet paper are luxury items to many of our neighbors in need. Since 2017, the United Way of Cayuga County has been committed to helping collect hygiene items with our annual Countywide Personal Care Drive.

Between our five annual events and our special museum exhibit drive in the fall of 2022, we have collected more than 13,900 hygiene products that have been distributed to food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and other programs throughout ALL of Cayuga County.

The event is made possible thanks to the support and partnership between several businesses, organizations, social clubs, and youth groups who host either a community drop-off site or internal drive to collect items. At the end of the drive, volunteers come together to pick up boxes, sort, count, and prepare items for distribution by our partners at the Food Providers Network, a program through CAP.

Local History | Personal Care Drive

Each year you see food drives around the holidays and school supply drives for back to school. Yet, there was nothing in place to help our neighbors in need seeking basic hygiene products such as laundry soap, shaving cream and razers, dental products, and more.

In 2017, the United Way of Cayuga accepted the challenge to help meet this need. Since the inaugural drive, we have partnered with the Food Providers Network, a program of CAP, to understand the need and distribute items countywide. During that first year, we reached out to the organizations who run United Way Campaigns throughout the fall and winter. We collected 3,000 items.
